The 12th of September is National Data Centre Day, a day dedicated to recognising the vital role data centres play in powering the UK's digital economy and meeting the countries AI ambitions.
This date marks the anniversary of when data centres were officially classified as Critical National Infrastructure (CNI) by the UK Government, highlighting their importance in keeping businesses, services, and society connected and providing infrastructure that’s as vital as water and energy.
From enabling cloud computing and AI to supporting essential services like healthcare, finance, and communications, data centres are the backbone of our digital world. Yet, they often go unnoticed.
National Data Centre Day aims to:

In 2026, National Data Centre Day is shifting from talking about public perception to changing it. With the #BackToSchool theme, the focus is on putting data centres on the curriculum and bringing real understanding directly into classrooms and homes across the UK.
From streaming and gaming to online learning and emergency services, we invite data centre professionals and tech leaders to show children and teenagers aged 8 to 16 that data centres are the hidden engines behind the digital world we rely on.
The goal is simple: Educate early, empower teachers, and build the next generation of digital talent.
We’re not just celebrating data centres. We’re growing a future that understands them.
